Skye Barker Maa is working to make the arts more accessible in Denver. One of her first moves was founding Neighborhood Music & Theatre, which provides quality private music lessons for both children and adults, in her basement back in 2012. But since then, she’s definitely moved up and out: Her latest venture is Factory Five Five, which she started in 2021 to provide an “inclusive, artistic community hub and event space.”

Aurora entrepreneur finds opportunity during the pandemic
When the pandemic hit, many businesses took a step back. But Skye Barker Maa took a step, actually several steps, forward. She’d already started a music school in Aurora, and last year, Barker Maa started a new fashion school as well as schools for photography, theater and film. And that’s not all.
To the tune of upbeat music, Factory Fashion brought a raving collection of looks to the runway. Each piece was created by kids ages 8 to 17 through a course taught by local designers. From corsets to lounge sets to elegant skirts and more, the Factory Fashion students brought something for everyone to the DFW stage.
The need for spaces where LGBTQ+ teens can safely express themselves is as important as ever. Tucked behind double doors in a private corner of the Stanley Marketplace lives a space of acceptance for the LGBTQ+ teens of Colorado. Greeting its members with a flashing, pink light and decorated in swatches of fabric, glitter, feathers and other knick-knacks, Fashion Factory has become a safe haven for teens like Charney.
